Bass Guitars

What is a bass guitar?

The bass guitar is a stringed instrument played primarily with the fingers or thumb, by plucking, slapping, popping, strumming, tapping, thumping, or with a plectrum. Bass guitars are similar in basic construction to electric guitars, but with a longer neck, scale length,, and usually four to six strings. Bass guitars are also only compatible with bass guitar strings, which have very heavy string gauges.

How is a bass guitar amplified?

Bass guitars are typically amplified using either a bass combo amp, or through a head and cabinet setup. Bass combo amplifiers combine both the speaker and amplifier together, which is very convenient if you need to lug your gear around often. The bass head and bass cab setup is a 2-piece rig. The bass head determines the amount of power to send from your output, which is then sent through to your bass cabinet (a passive speaker).

Another setup is through the combination of a preamplifier, EQ, and power amplifier - a setup often seen in live performance environments. The preamplifier is used to boost the signal from the bass guitar pickups and to shape the tone using a variety of EQ controls. The power amplifier is used to drive the speaker system and produce the final sound.

How often should I change the strings on the bass?

The answer to this question depends on a few factors, such as how often you play the bass, the type of strings you use, and the climate you live in. Generally speaking, you should change your strings every few months if you play the bass regularly, and every few weeks if you play it frequently. If you live in a humid climate, you may need to change your strings more often to prevent them from rusting.
